Robert Jackson
was born on
September 24th 1946. He was educated at Falcon College, Rhodesia, St
Edmunds Hall and All Souls College, Oxford, where he obtained an MA. He
was President of the Oxford Union in 1967.
Married to Caroline Frances, MEP for Wiltshire North and Bath, and
daughter of Geoffrey Harvey, they have one son - deceased.
Publications of his include, "South Asian Crisis, Pakistan,
Bangladesh", "The European Parliament: a guide for Direct
Elections", and "The Round Table: the Commonwealth Journal of
International Affairs". He is past editor of
"International
Affairs".
Robert Jackson's recreational activities include walking, gardening and
singing.

In 1974 Robert Jackson contested
Manchester Central, but it wasn't until 1979 that he became MEP for
Upper Thames. Previously, he had been political advisor to the
Secretary of
State (1973-74), to the Rt Hon. Sir Christopher Soames (1974-76), and to
Chef de Cabinet to Basil de Ferranti, MEP (1977-78). He has also been
political advisor to the Governor of Rhodesia (1980).
In 1983 Robert Jackson became MP for Wantage. Since then he has been
Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the
Department of Education and
Science (1987-90), at the Department of Employment
(1990-92), and also
Parliamentary Secretary at the Office of Public Service and Science
(1992-93).
He is a former Secretary of the Conservative Backbench Committee on
Agriculture and Foreign Affairs. In 1983 Robert Jackson was an EP
Rapporteur on EEC Budget. |

Robert Jackson campaigns for
a better NHS
While
the Minister talks about more money for health, Robert Jackson joined all-party
Local campaign against the Government's decision to close Community Hospitals
and beds in Oxfordshire - notably at Wallingford and Wantage
Labour
has diverted resources away from areas like Oxfordshire because we are all
supposed to be more healthy than elsewhere. As a result 2 local hospitals have
been closed, we have lost beds at Wantage, and Wallingford Hospital was only
saved at the last minute.
